5 signs your brand is ready for a refresh

Your business has grown, but does your brand show it? Here are five signs it's time for a refresh, and what to do about each one.

Most brands aren’t designed to last forever. They’re designed for the business you were when you started. Three years later you’ve added new services, reached new customers and maybe moved into a new city, yet your logo, colours and tone of voice are still talking to the old crowd.

A refresh isn’t a full rebrand. You keep what people already recognise and fix what’s holding you back. Here are five signs it’s time.

1. Your brand looks different everywhere

Your Instagram uses one blue, your packaging another, and your proposal deck a third. Each team member picks their own fonts. Nothing looks wrong on its own, but together it looks like three different companies.

Inconsistency costs trust. When customers can’t recognise you at a glance, they have to work harder to remember you, and most won’t.

What to do: Start with a simple brand guideline: logo versions, two or three colours with exact codes, one or two fonts, and a few do’s and don’ts. Even a 10-page guide fixes most of the drift.

2. You’ve outgrown your original audience

You started selling to students; now your best clients are corporate HR teams. Or you began as a local café and now ship coffee beans across Indonesia. If your brand still speaks to who you used to serve, the people you want now won’t feel it’s for them.

What to do: Write down who your top 10 customers are today. Then look at your website and feed through their eyes. Would they feel this brand was made for them?

3. You’re embarrassed to hand out your business card

This one is simple. If you apologise for your logo (“we’re redoing it soon”), avoid sending people to your website, or hesitate before pitching a bigger client, your brand is already costing you deals.

What to do: Note every moment you felt hesitant this month. That list is your refresh brief.

4. Competitors look more professional, even if they’re not better

Customers judge quality before they ever try your product. If a newer competitor with a sharper identity is winning pitches you should be winning, the gap is probably perception, not capability.

What to do: Put your homepage, logo and three recent posts side by side with your top three competitors. Be honest about who looks most trustworthy.

5. Your brand doesn’t work on today’s screens

A logo with fine lines and small text may have looked great on a signboard. On a 40-pixel profile picture or a phone screen it becomes a blur. Many older brands also lack a simple icon version for app icons, favicons and WhatsApp profiles.

What to do: Test your logo at small sizes: profile picture, browser tab, WhatsApp. If it’s unreadable, you need a simplified mark.

Most growing SMEs need a refresh, not a rebrand. It’s faster, cheaper and keeps the recognition you’ve already earned.
